I love space combat games. Sadly, there are way fewer chances to play them than I like (creature to creature skirmish is all the rage), but reading them and trying out the game solo is a lot of fun.

Recently I have been looking at the second edition of A Call to Arms: Star Fleet. This is a tabletop fleet action game set in the Star Fleet Universe, a fork of Star Trek that branched off back in the 1970’s with the arrival of “Star Fleet Battles.” If you don’t know, this universe is based on the Star Fleet Technical Manual created by an artist named Franz Joseph. It shows off technical drawings, documents, costumes, and props in a book that purports to be a manual of Star Fleet that was accidentally copied by the US Air Force when a mysterious UFO was seen by their planes (this has to be the original series episode “Tomorrow is Yesterday” from the descriptions). Because the license was from the book and not the series, there is a lot of Trek that the Star Fleet Universe is off limits to, but the creator, Steven V.
